We need to be able to think about having achieved more than we have right now, otherwise we couldn’t function in even basic ways.

To walk to a destination requires imagining that you are already there. However hopefully in that example we don’t feel bad for not being there, instead we simply focus on getting there step by step.

Perfectionism happens when—rather than focusing on clarifying realistic goals that are aligned with our values and working on them in manageable ways—instead we amplify the sense of where we need to be and feel bad for not being there.

Working with perfectionism typically involves giving some attention to both our self-esteem and our basic project management skills. Your worth is not determined by arriving places.

And people who focus on taking practical steps tend to be the kinds of people who achieve things, but also who are less reliant on needing to to begin with.
