the importance of choosing

Choice, intention or consent are very important ingredients and, in many cases, can matter more than the particular thing we are experiencing. Even partaking in your favourite activity generally isn’t nice if you’re forced to do it, whereas people may enjoy doing things that would typically be seen as unpleasant but, because they have chosen them, they are enjoyable. When something is safe, yet we feel uncomfortable around it, it’s very often because we are resisting it and the feelings of not being in control can be worse than the actual experience.

Action: By choosing to connect a little bit more with the feelings that manifest, the thoughts that we are concerned about or the experiences that are creating challenges we can often become more comfortable around them whilst still not needing to like them. This is much like the way a skilled fire-fighter learns to feel around fire.
