practical positivity

Positivity is a popular concept but there are many definitions of it, some of which are contradictory. A simple way of thinking about positivity is as a synonym for the word constructive. Practically this means not ignoring difficulties, or trying to pretend that bad things are good, but recognising problems – as well as resources and opportunities – and addressing difficulties with whatever tools are available.

Action: If there is a challenge in your life; rather than pretending it doesn’t exist or trying to resist it’s existence, consider what options could be taken to overcome it. This might mean being solution-focused and finding ways to remove the problem, or it may mean managing despite the difficulty and still doing your best. Sometimes it will involve taking another approach so the problem is avoided. Also focus on what’s going well, and recognise ways that you can expand these benefits.
