Sometimes we focus more on what we are doing, rather than on why or how we’re doing it. The same action can be motivated by the fear of something going wrong, desire for an end result, or simply the enjoyment of engaging in an activity for its own sake. None of these underlying motivations are inherently wrong, however some are a better fit for certain purposes than others.
Action: Consider an activity that you engage in (or that you don’t). What motivates you? If it’s fear, or the consequences of not doing it, this might not work so well in the long term. If it’s a desire for an end result, that might be okay however wanting to be somewhere, but not focusing on enjoying taking the steps to get there, can make it hard to get there as well as leading to the postponement of your enjoyment. Enjoying taking those steps in the present for their own sake can both increase your happiness, as well as help you to achieve goals and avoid difficulties.
