The mind and body is a sophisticated system. Sometimes we may hear that it is therapeutically beneficial to go ‘deep’ and to connect with and process certain beliefs or emotions, while other times we may hear the benefits of focusing on what’s happening in the present moment and addressing that instead. In fact both approaches can be perfectly valid, if used in the appropriate circumstances, and in most cases it’s not a question of either one or the other but an integration of both.
Action: If you take a football and turn it inside out, the hidden interior now becomes the exterior and vice versa. When creating personal change in your life if you ignore the depths then sometimes it can be harder to know what meaningful work to do in the present moment. Conversely, if an excessive amount of time is spent focusing on the depths, the day to day now becomes the depth and could potentially benefit from more focus. Taking an integrative and holistic approach will allow you to recognise that all components of your life have the opportunity to come together in a meaningful and balanced way.
