generalising progress

With thousands of experiences every day, and hundreds of days each year, it can be daunting to try and make sense of life. We might be concerned that we need to work with each and every potentially troublesome experience in order to make progress. Sometimes, however, it can be better to look at psychological progress as being more like progress with our physical health: as muscles to be strengthened.

Action: If you were attending a physiotherapist, and while there you were practising walking up and down a small set of steps, you wouldn’t then feel the need to have to repeat the same exercises on every flight of steps in the world. You would know that the muscle that you are developing will help you on whatever sets of steps you happen to be using. In a similar way, appreciate that making better sense and processing the feelings of key experiences and patterns in your life can help you develop a perspective that can generalise across the board.
